Loule is located 18km inland from Faro and has a population of about 20,000. The town itself consists of a maze of narrow streets where craftsmen still carry out old traditional crafts including producing textiles, shoes and other articles like furniture and pottery.

| Loule has a history of both Roman and Moorish occupation. There are the remains of a Moorish castle built in the 13th Century and the main church of St. Clement, which was also built near the end of the 13th century. It is situated on the site of an earlier mosque. Like other towns in the Algarve, Loule was partially destroyed by the earthquake in 1755 but the town has recovered and today is a thriving market/tourist town. |

Today, one of the main reasons to visit Loule is it's market, where you can purchse anything from fruit and veg to fresh fish, from leatherwear to tableware. The market attracts tourists from all over the Algarve, especially on a Saturday when local gypsys run a simultaneous outdoor sale.
And of course we can not forget the carnival in held every year in February. Not quite on the scale of Rio, but its a couple of days of parades with floats, fancy dress, practical jokes and high spirits.
The municipality of Loulé also includes some of the most important tourist resorts in Portugal including Vilamoura, Quarteira,Vale de Lobo,Vale do Garrão and Quinta do Lago, all of which have blue flag beaches. More Algarve>
